Preparing the Child for the Way

Each August, we find ourselves sharpening pencils, preparing lunch boxes, and setting alarm clocks a bit earlier. As parents and educators, it’s natural to want to prepare the way for our children by removing obstacles, smoothing rough paths, and creating an easier journey. This work matters. Routines, organization, and preparation help our students walk into the classroom with confidence.

But as we consider our deeper calling, we are reminded that our greatest task is not simply to prepare the way, but it is to prepare the child for the way.

Preparing the way looks like detailed lesson plans, color-coded schedules, and packed sports bags by the door. At school, it’s teachers setting up classrooms, posting rules, and establishing daily rhythms. At home, it may be healthy meals, carpool coordination, or making sure homework folders are signed. These practices matter, and they provide important scaffolding as our children grow. But if we stop here, we risk raising children who are dependent on the path being cleared for them rather than learning how to walk with strength, faith, and resilience when the path is uncertain.

Preparing the child means shaping habits of heart and mind that will sustain them no matter the terrain. It means helping them practice resilience by encouraging them to try again when they stumble. As we point them toward Christ when they face challenges, we help them strengthen their faith and create a firm foundation. Students that build the habits of attention, responsibility, and perseverance are equipped for a lifetime of learning and growth.

When we prepare the child for the way, we are raising young people who will not crumble when faced with difficulty, but instead lean into God’s strength and the good habits they’ve practiced at home and in the classroom.

In Proverbs it tells us to “train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Training up a child is not about guaranteeing a perfectly smooth road, but about equipping the child with deep roots in faith and godly habits so they can weather storms and walk with wisdom.

In the classroom, teachers prepare lessons with care, create safe environments, and set clear expectations. At home, parents nurture habits, hold conversations, and implement routines that reinforce these same values. When school and home move in the same direction, children are strengthened and shaped for the way ahead. Together, may we raise children who are ready for the way, whatever it may hold, because they are rooted in Christ.
