The Human Element of Education

Throughout history, there has been a continuum of tools used in education. From the first Mesopotamian clay tablets and the use of papyrus in ancient Egypt to the invention of the printing press in 1440, each advancement has moved learning forward. Accessibility has expanded, communication has accelerated, and the ideas captured have increased exponentially. The digital revolution (and now the introduction of AI) marks another leap, extending what the learner can do through phones, screens, and intelligent technologies.

As tools change, the essence of education remains the same. Learning is a profoundly human endeavor. It is rooted in curiosity, connection, and the shared pursuit of knowledge. Technology may alter the way we learn, but the heart of education has always been to help children become the kinds of people who can live meaningful lives of service to others, while leading with great skill and integrity. At Landmark, we talk about character and competence when we consider the progress of our learners. Both are critical to a student’s ultimate success in today’s classroom and tomorrow’s workplace.

In an effort to educate our students for the future, the following ideas remain central to our work of education.

The act and work of learning is central to the formation of development of personhood. It should cultivate habits of the mind and resilience in our students as they pursue excellence.

In learning, students interact with the world and consider their place in it. They should be able to apply knowledge meaningfully, collaborate with others, and live out the calling of a servant leader.

We gather together as a community of learners to grow in understanding, develop a love for knowledge, and to make new connections that form the rich life of the mind. This is done as a continuous process in a collective community.

Learning requires reflection and critical thinking, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through thoughtful, worthy work.

The act of learning is not a neutral, passive process. It requires active engagement and curiosity on the part of the student and the teacher.

These ideas embrace the humanity of the learner and the learning process itself. While AI and many other applications may enhance the learning experience, our educational philosophy remains steadfastly human-centered. Alongside these principles, we can utilize the power of these incredible technological advances in the learning process.

At Landmark, we view the best use of technology through the acronym H-AI-H, where H stands for human, AI stands for artificial intelligence, and the final H again for human. Ideas begin with human creativity, then AI can be used as a tool for brainstorming, organization, generation, or refinement. A return to human intelligence then brings all of the pieces together into a final product. Ultimately, it is the human who brings meaning and purpose to the work.

As we embrace these timeless truths and emerging tools in our teaching, we continue with a clear purpose to shape deep thinkers, grounded in character and skilled in competence who are confident and ready to impact the world for Jesus Christ.
